Getting Ready for Your Shipping Container Delivery
Preparing for Your Container’s Arrival
So, you’ve ordered the right shipping container. Exciting! But before it arrives, there are a few things to consider to ensure a smooth delivery process.
Space is Key
- Clear the Path: Ensure there’s a clear, straight path to the desired location. This includes removing any obstacles like trees, power lines, or buildings.
- Measure Twice:
- 20-foot container: You’ll need about 75 feet of straight, clear space. 20′ foot deliveries are much easier than 40′ deliveries, but being mindful of a short, tall, truck that can tip easily can be hazardous if not on level ground.
- 40-foot container: Prepare for about 120 feet to be safe. Do not expect the truck to jump a fence, or maneuver sideways
- Mind the Height: Ensure there’s at least 20 feet of overhead clearance, especially during delivery.
Groundwork Matters
- Level Ground: The delivery site should be level and firm. This is really so important, do not mistake your small car for a comparison to a 65′ Long truck and trailer with 10,000 lbs on it.
- Surface Check: Concrete, asphalt, gravel, or compacted earth are suitable surfaces. Scrub brush can be a sneaky foe. It can tear the wire out of a trailer and cause lots of damage for the driver, and possibly even strand him/her.
Additional Tips
- Permits: In some areas, you may need permits for placing a shipping container on your property. Check local regulations since they can vary widely.
- Access Road: The access road to the delivery site should be wide enough for the delivery truck, and the turning radius needs to be accounted for. A truck that is 65 feet long needs plenty of room to turn. Make sure there are no parked cars in the way, and that the gate is wide enough.
- Heavy Lifting: If you plan to move the container, consider hiring a crane or forklift, you can also think about walking the container around by the corners instead of lifting the whole thing.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure a hassle-free delivery and be ready to transform your shipping container into your dream space.
